Much of the work we do at Oklahoma Messages Project focuses on connecting children with their mother or father who is in prison. We often forget that grandparents are also missing out on important memories and bonding with their grandchildren when they are in prison. Many grandparents, like the grandmother we recently filmed, never get an opportunity to even meet their grandchild.
A grandparents relationship with a grandchild is a very important relationship for development and family bonding. Not getting an opportunity to hold that grandchild, let them know how proud they are of the grandchild can leave huge voids for the grandchild and the grandparent. A Boston College study found that “an emotionally close relationship between grandparent and grandchildren is associated with fewer symptoms of depression for both generations.”
It’s important to help mend relationships that may have broken and establish relationships that may have never existed between grandparents and their grandchildren. That is why we are proud to be able to use the video messages to connect families and mend hearts.
“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” – Alex Haley
