“If you have a heart for children and those who are less fortunate and made some bad choices, you will be blessed to touch the lives of these inmates, their kids and families. You can’t imagine how powerful it will be.”- Vicky Reid, Volunteer since 2011
Each year, our volunteers visit prisons for several months before Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and help connect incarcerated parents to their children by filming the parent reading a book to their children and sharing a personal message.
Our staff and volunteers then send these videos, along with the actual book that the parents read, to the children in care of their guardians. The kids are able to hear a positive, loving message from Mom or Dad, followed by a bedtime story that they can read along with every single day. This simple ritual helps these children maintain a positive relationship with their parent(s), while boosting their literacy and self-esteem. Most importantly, it lets the children know that they are loved and not forgotten.
How To Get Involved
We are looking for volunteers to:
- Help with filming parents reading a book to their children at the various prisons across the state of Oklahoma. To volunteer in the prisons, please fill out the approval form from the state of Oklahoma to participate.
- Put together video and book packages to send to the children in care of their guardians.
- Sponsor a child to go to Shiloh Camp for the Summer 2018.
- Help with fundraising efforts and events.
These children deserve hope and a brighter future, and you can help!
“We can’t change the world in 1 video, but we can make a difference in a young child’s life by bringing them a video that can give them days and days of happiness as they see a healthy and loving parent on their TV’s.”-Anonymous, Volunteer
